Earth Expo
Montgomery SWCD participates in this annual event that showcases area
companies offering environmental and health-related products, services
and educational programs. Held
in early March at Fairfield Commons Mall, our goal is to increase the
community’s awareness of the connection between human health and the
health of the environment.
-
Tree Seedling Sale
This is a very popular program that has helped thousands of property
owners provide wildlife habitat and beauty to their landscape for many
years. Deadline for orders is usually the middle of March.
Some items are of limited quantity so it’s a good idea to
place orders early. Our offerings include hardwoods, evergreens,
shrubs, groundcovers, wildflowers, bird books, birdhouses and feeders.
-
Pond Clinic
This is usually an event co-sponsored with Preble County SWCD in May
of each year. Topics
covered include ornamental ponds, aeration, nutrient control, fish
management, safety, and liability.
Admission and meal are free.
The 2002 location will be in Montgomery County.
-
Farm Tour
This is a program currently being developed.
In August 2000 we hosted the inaugural event, visiting ten
locations in western Montgomery County, including an equestrian
center, a dairy, a tree farm, and an aquaculture facility.
Our goal is to educate urban and suburban residents about the
diversity and importance of agriculture in our county.
-
Conservation Corner
At the Montgomery County Fair, our District coordinates a showcase of
environmental service agencies available for the citizens in our
county. From forestry to
wildlife, agriculture to scenic rivers, there is bound to be something
of interest to everyone. We
hope you’ll come by and relax in our lounge area with a cool cup of
water and enjoy the abundant plant life and flowing water garden.
The fair goes from the last Wednesday in August through the Labor Day
weekend.
-
District Annual Meeting
Conducted the third Saturday of September, the meeting is a chance for
landowners in the county to elect Supervisors to our Board, and review
the District’s accomplishments over the past year.
We also officially recognize outstanding cooperators and
educators for exemplary efforts in the cause of natural resource
conservation.
-
V.I.P. Tour
Each October, we organize a tour of our completed conservation projects
for elected officials. Maintaining
contact with our local and state legislators is an important effort
because they are able see firsthand how tax dollars are transformed
into conservation works of improvement.
These are an investment in long term benefits for our
communities, including protection of water quality, reduced cropland
erosion, improved wildlife habitat, and increased agricultural
productivity.
