Wolf Creek Stream Team
Begun in 2002, there are currently ten volunteers that collect
stream quality data at five sites along Wolf Creek, each month from
April through October. Data has been collected consistently
since 2003, and is managed by the Education Specialist at the
District office. There are also quarterly meetings and
newsletters. This initiative is an opportunity to learn more
about water quality in the communities of Brookville, Clayton,
Trotwood, and Perry Township. The best contribution that
Stream Team members give is as educated citizens involved in their
community's decision-making processes, regarding how development
affects water quality. Training is available at no charge, and
other
volunteer jobs are available besides stream monitoring.
Pond Clinic
Each spring the District partners with Preble Soil and Water
Conservation District to host a seminar for pond owners.
Topics covered usually include construction, vegetation and fish
management, and liability issues. Contact the office for the
current year's event information.
Spring Plant Sale
This is an annual spring fund raiser for the District's Education
program. It also is a cost effective way for homeowners to
implement conservation-conscious landscaping. The important aspect
of using plants native to Ohio, is that not only can you create an
aesthetically pleasing surrounding, but also provide food and
shelter for native species of birds, butterflies and other
beneficial insects. Furthermore, once established, native
plant communities require little or no maintenance in terms of
weeding, fertilizers, pesticides, or watering. See the home
page of this web site for details about this year's sale.
River Cleanups
The District has partnered with other conservation organizations in
the Miami Valley since 2001, to conduct annual river cleanups by
canoe on the Stillwater and Great Miami Rivers. Experienced
canoeists are needed each year in June for the Stillwater and July
for the Great Miami River cleanup events. Canoes provided or
you may bring your own. Watch newspapers and this web site for
more information in late spring.
Annual Meeting
Each September the District hosts a banquet with keynote speaker and
other activities to review our accomplishments for the year.
Conservation practice 'Cooperators' and other conservation-minded
community members are invited to attend.
